Food security indicators include prevalence of moderate and severe food insecurity, obstacles to obtaining sufficient food and coping mechanisms for food insecurity. It is recommended to use the Food Insecurity Experience Scale (FIES), which is a survey-based measure of the severity of food insecurity. The FIES relies on people’s direct responses to a set of questions regarding their actual experiences in accessing food. The information is collected at the individual level, which allows for disaggregation by sex and age to explore possible disparities in food access.
